Muhammad Akram Karimi wins 3 Minute Thesis Competition at prestigious IEEE Microwave Symposium OverviewMuhammad Akram Karimi, a fourth-year Ph.D. student working in the Integrated Microwaves Packaging Antennas & Circuits Technology(IMPACT) Lab headed by Prof. Atif Shamim in CEMSE division, recently won the Three Minute Thesis(3MT) Competition held during theIEEE MTT International Microwave Symposium (IMS2019) in Boston, US. IEEE IMS is a 60 years old conference which is considered to be the flagship conference for microwave engineers and scientists. Karimi’s presentation entitled “Making Materials Smart Using Microwaves” was adjudged the winner out of a pool of twenty-three fellow student finalists. Developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2008, the 3MT format aims to “cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills.” Per the 3MT competition guidelines, participating students had to present and explain their research to attendees in an effective succinct manner over a three-minute period. This year 60 papers were initially shortlisted for the 3MT competition. For further screening, a thirty-second short video about the research work had to be submitted, which was reviewed by the Technical Program Committee(TPC). Based on TPC recommendations, 23 candidates were shortlisted to compete at the conference venue. Akram came out as the winner of this competition while Georgia Tech and MIT students secured second and third places respectively.
