Additively Manufactured Conformal Microwave Sensors for Applications in Oil Industry

Modern industries are adapting smart ways of monitoring their processes to ensure smooth operations. Sensors capable of early detection of a problem are becoming the norm in industrial processes. This is key to the development of the “Internet of Things” (IoT), in which billions of interconnected devices will work together to make smart decisions. Sensors that can detect and communicate the process information are essential ingredients of any IoT-enabled network. Since billions of such sensor nodes will be required in the future, the low cost will be an important feature for these devices. Consistent with the above-mentioned trends, the oil industry is also adapting smart monitoring and actuation mechanisms for its day-to-day operations. This thesis is focused on developing low-cost sensors, which can increase oil production efficiency through real-time monitoring of oil wells and also help in the safe transport of oil products from the wells to the refineries.

Karimi's work on low cost and zero weight water-cut sensors stood out for its quality and distinctive application-direct approach. Successfully, he proved cost reductions of 100 times lower and dropping weight to 1,000 times below than the ones currently available in the market.

Ph.D. student Muhammad Akram Karimimi from the research team of Atif Shamim, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at KAUST and Director of IMPACT Laboratory, was one of the finalists in the Student Paper Competition at the International Microwave Symposium held in San Francisco, California, in May 2016.

Muhammad Akram Karimi describes himself as an inquisitive-minded researcher who loves to solve industrial challenges through science and technology. Karimi is a third-year Ph.D. student working in the Integrated Microwaves Packaging Antennas & Circuits Technology (IMPACT) Lab under the supervision of Professor Atif Shamim. His current research focus is on the design of low-cost and printed microwave sensors for various industrial applications, with a prime focus on the oil industry.

Muhammad Akram Karimi obtained his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering under the supervision of Professor Atif Shamim at Integrated Microwaves Packaging Antennas & Circuit Technology (IMPACT) Research Group at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Research Interest Muhammad's research interests included the Design of Cost-Effective and robust Fluidic Sensors to characterize fluids (esp. Crude Oil) and Energy Harvesting.
