Dr. Sakandar Rauf and research team from Prof Atif Shamim’s group, developed fully screen printed gentle-to-skin wet ECG electrodes integrated with a scaled-down printed circuit board (PCB) packaged inside a 3D-printed antenna-on-package (AoP). This is the first wireless ECG system employing fully screen-printed electrodes developed in Saudi Arabia. The gentle-to-skin wet ECG electrode screen printed on a plastic substrate only require 265 times less metal for the conductive part and 176 times less ECG electrode gel than the standard commercial wet ECG electrodes. IEEE APS is organizing the 13th Annual Student Design Competition this year in Denver. The topic for this year is “Miniaturized Antennas in IoT Applications”. Out of 30 submissions, only 6 teams have been selected as finalists in the competition. KAUST IMPACT Lab team, in collaboration with KU Leuven and UESTC, has qualified for the finals. An ultra-small Bluetooth low energy (BLE) tag for tracking of Red Palm weevils (RPW), developed by IMPACT lab researcher’s Rana Muhammad Bilal and Zulma Reyes Lopez, under supervision of Prof. Atif Shamim, was presented at IEEE ICMAC 2021 conference in Islamabad, Pakistan. The Tag measures approximately half the size of a human finger nail, and is mounted on thorax of RPWs (cockroach sized pests of Date palms) for tracking.
